First Personal Training Session

Question:

I have recently obtained my PT certification.

I am looking for suggestions on the best way to structure a 1st Free personal training session / consultation.

My goal is to increase the percentage of clients that buy additional sessions / packages beyond the free one.

Answer:

As much as most personal trainers hate the word "sales," the business of personal training is just that, "sales."

You are Selling 3 things to Prospective Clients

1.  Yourself

2.  Your Service

3.  Results

The personal training consultation and first personal training session are a feeling out process for you and your client.

If possible it is best to have a full consultation before the first personal training session.  It is important to know everything about your client's past health, nutrition and physical activity history.

Always remember, your client has come to you to provide them with something which they cannot get by themselves.

If they have been an avid bicycle rider their whole life, showing them how to use the stationary bike will do nothing but hurt your chances of their signing up for more sessions, etc.

Use the feeling out process and the information the client provides to figure out what you can provide them with which they cannot provide themselves with.

It is pretty simple when you think about it.  By being helpful and showing the client new things (2.  your service) which they have never done before on the first personal training session, and how they will benefit (3. results), they are usually eager to sign up for more personal training sessions by believing in you (1.  yourself)as a personal trainer
