Miami of Ohio University Masters Degree Review

What was your college like?
How was the location? How were the facilities?
I am from Florida and not used to the freezing weather in Ohio. Fortunately,
several other things more than made up for the inclement weather.
The college had an amazing recreation center which had climbing walls,
Olympic quality swimming lanes, an indoor track, and several lines of state of
the art fitness equipment. There was also another hardcore weightlifting gym
located on campus. The hardcore gym consisted of free weights, a squat rack, a
few benches, and one reverse hyperextension machine.
It cost $50 a semester to be a member and get a key to this 24 hour filthy
dungeon of a gym. Community members who had been prior felons used to join the
gym because even though it was on campus it was open to anyone and it was
hardcore and very inexpensive to workout there.
Everyone was cool at the dungeon and people were there to just get stronger
and bigger. People would always spot each other, yell encouragement, and make
sure form and range of motion were perfect.
When we wanted to get a super intense workout in we would go to the dungeon
and when we wanted to go check out the hot girls we would go to the state of the
art gym and just walk around the machines. (LOL) The women on campus were so
amazingly hot that Miami University could have been confused with the Play Boy
Mansion.
Needless to say, there were awesome bars and parties there and one could
never be bored. One truly has to make some time to study there or they will have
too much fun and fail out!
What were the Studies and
Faculty Like ?
I would have to say that the studies there bit on the difficult/hard side,
but it was something that I expected. The faculty was very easily accessible,
but they expected their students to actually study and learn.
I guess that I do not blame them because several of them were the textbook
authors and editors for the Sport and Exercise Psychology textbooks used
throughout North America. Dr. Weinberg, Dr. Vealey, and Dr. Horn were my
professors and they gave me all the necessary knowledge to begin my career as a
mental strength coach. For my studies, I also took several exercise physiology
and biomechanics oriented coursework.
What are
you doing now and how did your college degree help/hinder you with your current
job as a personal trainer (or related field)?
My degree was actually in Sports Psychology and this school was considered
the top terminal masters degree in the field in the country. I thought that I
had it all planned out and since I had several inroads in the tennis world
coaches and clients would be beating down my door to get my services once I got my
degree.
At first the degree hurt me and no coaches, athletes, or parents wanted to
deal with a sports psychology guru. Fortunately, I had a pretty strong
background, a personal training certification, and I had participated in my own
training as a college athlete and fitness enthusiast.
Although no one wanted a sports psychologist, everyone wanted to get bigger
stronger and faster. Therefore, I studied and became knowledgeable in the area
of strength and conditioning. For 15 years, I have taught highly ranked junior
tennis players how to become stronger and faster, helped parents of these tennis
players get more fit, and sold high-end home gym equipment.
I have recently started The Home Fitness Professionals Association which is
geared towards home fitness trainers wanting to make a lucrative career and be
thought of as true professionals.

Rating of
College Degree and Final Words
My graduate school training gave me a some good basics,
made it necessary for me to focus on reading and study skills, and I was required
to read and understand several journal articles.
Because of these study skills I
acquired, I was able to read and understand several strength and conditioning
journals and books. It prepared me for my studying of the NSCS/CSCS exam and
furthered my knowledge and confidence of my own reading, writing and
communication skills.
In a roundabout way, my graduate
studies and degree were quite helpful in giving me the confidence and competence
to get where I am today. I would have to give the worthiness of my
graduate studies an 8.5
