Gazelle Freestyle Review

Introduction

The Gazelle Freestyle was developed by former Junior National Bodybuilding champion and certified personal trainer Tony Little. In 1983, while training for the Mr. America Bodybuilding Championship, Tony Little was in a near-fatal car accident; afterwards he suffered from depression, and became addicted to pain medication and gained significant weight.

He recovered, and developed his successful exercise programs and in-home training equipment, including the Gazelle Freestyle. The Freestyle offers ten exercises in a single, easy-to-use machine, focusing on weight loss, muscle toning, and cardiovascular fitness. The Freestyle is marketed on Tony Little’s Website, Tonylittle.com.

The Gazelle Freestyle provides a low-impact arc training workout for all fitness levels. The premise of the Freestyle is that the machine’s gliding arc motion works the muscles of both the upper and lower body while burning calories and improving cardiovascular endurance. Its range of motion allows users to go from a slow walk to a full run with no sudden stops and no strain on the joints.

The basic workout instructions are simple – lean forward for a greater workout to the arms, lean backward for a greater workout to the legs. Features of the Freestyle include: a workout computer that delivers immediate feedback on speed, distance, time, and approximate calories burned; a built-in thumb pulse monitor for tracking heart rate; extra-wide, non-skid foot platforms; the space-saving design of a foldable footprint for easy storage; and a personal trainer DVD featuring Tony Little and fitness teacher Sharon Money Twombley instructing various different exercises. (One caution: the exercises promoted in the DVD may be risky for some; the user must make certain he or she is well balanced on the equipment before proceeding.)

The Gazelle Freestyle is easy to assemble. Use of a ratcheting screwdriver bolt tightener is recommended in lieu of the provided wrenches. Also, be aware that the axel rod arrives completely coated in a thick layer of petroleum jelly – do not assemble on carpet! The products dimensions are 53.5 x 33.5 x 44 inches. Users need an additional 12″ of space in front and behind for the swinging arms. The maximum weight capacity is 300 pounds.

The Gazelle Freestyle is a useful low cost, in-home fitness machine – the machine sells for just over $200. (For an even better buy, consider the lesser priced Gazelle Edge, which only lacks a few of the Freestyle’s features and is of comparable quality.)

Gazelle Freestyle Review – The Drawbacks

Potential purchasers should keep in mind, however, that with the Gazelle Freestyle “you do get what you pay for”. The shortcomings are many: Though the machine is foldable for storage, it is not easily ported – folded, it remains rather heavy (46 pounds) and unwieldy. The heart monitor is not dependable. The timer does not include a reset button.

Overall Rating:

There is very little resistance and no way to alter it. The construction is in part inferior – plastic bushings, etc. Squeaking may occur. Slightly unstable machine – movements are jerky compared to a standard elliptical. The distance between the tubes where the user stands is a mere 18″ – not enough room for all users. And, the workout is best-suited to the beginner; advanced exercisers will find that the Freestyle does not provide enough resistance for an adequate workout.
