We all have our favorite type of coffees, whether it’s plain black coffee, caramel latte or double espresso. Despite our varying preferences, something that almost all casual drinkers and connoisseurs can agree on is the fact that cold brew coffee is simply the best.
Cold brew coffee is simply coffee that has been brewed in either room temperature or cold water, for up to one day. The result is a more softened tasted that’s full-bodied and slightly less acidic. The latter is made possible because, due to the lack of heat, the bitter-tasting oils are not extracted from the beans as effectively.
Developing a fondness for cold brew coffee can be bad news for your wallet. They’re more expensive and you’ll quickly find yourself spending more than a $100 a month if you keep buying them every day. Luckily, it’s easy enough and cheaper to brew it at home.
The Recipe
- Using a coffee grinder, grind about eight ounces of your preferred coffee beans until they’re coarse. If you don’t have a large grinder, you may have to do this in batches.
- Place the ground coffee in an appropriate container (like a pitcher) and pour 8 cups of water.
- Mix the coffee and water while gently stirring.
- Place the mixture in a refrigerator and let it steep for around 12 hours. Do not let it remain for more than 24 hours.
- Place a mesh strainer over a cup and pour it through. Depending on the quantity you’ve made, you may have to do this in batches.
- You can then pour the coffee into an airtight jar and store it in a refrigerator for up to two weeks.
- Serving is easy: place ice cubes into a cup, fill it halfway with cold brew coffee and mix the remaining half with cold water. You can then add milk, sugar or cream to your taste.
And that’s all there is to making a nice cup of cold brew coffee. A huge advantage of brewing coffee this way is that since it tastes less bitter, you do not need to add much sugar. Hence it has the potential to be even healthier than coffee brewed the normal way.
